James Edward Lawley, born and raised in Alabama, attended Linden High School from August 1954 to December 1956. He was drafted during his senior year to serve in the army in December 1957. While enlisted, he completed his coursework and got permission to take part in Linden High School's commencement ceremony. Despite having his cap and gown ready, he was, unfortunately, unable to attend the ceremony since his unit was called away for maneuvers a few days prior. At the age of 86, Mr. Lawley expressed his sincere wish to finally take part in a Linden High School commencement ceremony, wearing the cap and gown he prepared more than 60 years ago. Together with Mr. Lawley, the graduates of the Linden High School Class of 2024 convened for their commencement ceremony on Friday, May 17, at 6:00 p.m., and received their diplomas.
